Implant Matrix by Philip Beesley is an interactive geotextile. The matrix is capable of mechanical empathy. A network of mechanisms react to human occupants as erotic prey. The structure responds to human presence with subtle grasping and sucking motions, ingesting organic materials and incorporating them into a new hybrid entity.

I am interested in exploring interactions that may be overlooked or are very subtle and drawing attention to these experiences that occur on a daily basis and are very ephemeral.  I am also very interested in making the invisible visible or visible invisible.

1.  Air: Air touches us and surrounds us constantly.  It is invisible but can be felt.  It has a movement that can be seen by objects that it touches.  An environment that changes the way air flows.  Normally we think about air flowing in a horizontal axis but I am interested in changing that and using air to flow in a vertical way in to create “walls” that could be used as invisible architecture.

On a more intimate level I am interested in breathing and anxiety.  Many times in situations that provoke high anxiety our breathing is stressed.  I am interested in creating something that attaches to the body maybe a ring or a bracelet that reminds us to stay calm and take deep breaths.

2.  Grass:  we are constantly in contact with floor or ground.  I am interested in changing or augmenting our experience of the floor plane by changing the color or texture so that as you walk the ground is changing color or shape to record your movement or having its own memory.

3.  Water:  I would like to augment our connection with water by using sound or vibrations to change our relationship physically and visually.  Pulsations would allow for us to visually see the movement.  I would also like to try to find a way to allow for a different state of tactility.  As an experiment maybe placing a speaker under a water balloon or any soft waterproof membrane that would allow for a tactile experience.
